Azolla
Azolla (mosquito fern, duckweed fern, fairy moss, water fern)
is a genus of seven species of aquatic ferns, the only genus in the
family Azollaceae. They are extremely reduced in form and specialized,
looking nothing like conventional ferns but more resembling duckweed or
some mosses.
They float on the surface of water by means of numerous, small,
closely-overlapping scale-like leaves, with their roots hanging in the
water. They form a symbiotic relationship with the cyanobacterium
Anabaena azollae, which allows the plants to fix nitrogen from the air.

Azolla Control The end of the road for
floating water fern - a safe effective biological alternative
Looking for a cheaper more effective alternative for controlling Azolla?
Look no further, Azollacontrol from CABI Bioscience offers you a
comprehensive natural control option for managing this most noxious of
weeds.
Azollacontrol makes use of the North American weevil Stenopelmus
rufinasus. This weevil is a highly effective natural enemy of Azolla
filiculoides. The weevil, which can only feed and reproduce on Azolla
spp., has proved itself to be successful biological control agent in
laboratory and field trials in South Africa as well as the UK.

Azolla filiculoides :: Flora of Northern Ireland web
site This little fern floats on the surface of ponds or
lakes with its roots hanging down into the water. It is an American
species introduced as a plant for garden ponds from which it has escaped
into watercourses and lakes around the Province, including Lough Neagh.
The plant has become very abundant in some of these lakes in the last
ten years or so and its survival over winter in the wild may have been
helped by a rise in average winter temperatures in Northern Ireland.
Sometimes it can completely cover the surface of a pond and forms dense
masses of material washed up on the Lough Neagh shores in the autumn.

Azolla Caroliniana Azolla caroliniana
(Carolina Azolla, Carolina Mosquito Fern, Water velvet) is a species of
Azolla native to the Americas, in eastern North America from southern
Ontario southward, and from the east coast west to Wisconsin and Texas,
and in the Caribbean, and in Central and South America from southeastern
Mexico (Chiapas) south to northern Argentina and Uruguay.[1]
Frond detail
Frond detail
It is a freshwater aquatic fern, with scale-like fronds 5–10 mm long,
green to reddish, most often reddish in strong light and in winter. They
are covered in fine hairs that give it the appearance of velvet.[2][3]
It is able to fix nitrogen from the air by means of symbiotic
cyanobacteria. It can survive winter water temperatures of 5 °C, with
optimum summer growth between 25-30 ºC.[4]
