Azolla weed trialled as new feed source

With grain prices at record highs this season, a new type of feed for livestock may have been discovered in Victoria's Goulburn Valley.

The azolla weed, which grows in waterways, is being trialled as a viable food source for livestock.

The Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority's Geoff Earl says tests still need to be completed but it looks promising....................

 Amazing azolla acquires an alternative ‘avatar’

 Fodder is an important requirement for cattle. Even if the animals are fed with commercial feeds from the market, fresh green grass or dry straw is a must for them as fodder availability greatly reduces the expenditure on commercial feeds.

 Forum: A green solution to the green revolution / A look at a model farm in the Philippines

* 25 August 1990

THE SUCCESS of the Green Revolution depended on farmers switching to high-yielding varieties of crops and intensive use of fertilisers and pesticides. Not only is such technology beyond the reach of poorer farmers, but the intensive use of agrochemicals in the Third World is leading to environmental and health problems ('Tropical farmers 'at risk' from pesticides', New Scientist, 24 February).

One small peasant farmer on the island of Panay in the Philippines has developed an integrated system of farming that increases the yields of his land more than any Green Revolution, and yet requires no chemical input. The originator is 63-year-old Mamerto Fantilanan, and his system is based on a tiny plant called azolla and the principle of 'giving back to nature what you take from it'. Fantilanan's half-hectare irrigated farm provides total self-sufficiency for a family of 13, in addition to producing a net annual income of 70 000 peso (about $3000). This is more than twice the income of nearby farmers with four times the amount of land.
